Classroom Spotlight: Mr. Nielsen

The English classes at MEC will be studying one of the most influential forces in our daily lives: the power of branding. Students will read a variety of texts to familiarize themselves with the strategies brands use to persuade consumers. Students will also view a variety of advertisements and learn how to analyze and write about visual media. The final three texts in this unit will explore the ethics of branding. Students will also debate how much responsibility brands owe their consumers and decide if branding is either helpful or harmful. An engaging related media exploration will guide students through the research process with the Apple brand to prepare them for their own research. Students will have the opportunity to apply these skills as they independently research and write an essay about a self-selected brand of their choice. By the end of the unit, students will be able to explain the strategies brands use to influence consumers, take a stance on the ethics of branding, analyze and write descriptively about visual media, and conduct their own independent research.
